Congenital and hereditary genetic diseases are becoming a significant health burden in India and hence there is a need for adequate and effective genetic testing and counseling services. The diagnostic tests for inherited disorders available in India are at a nascent stage. Some prenatal diagnostics are available that too at a few hospitals. Lack of specialty recognition; scarcity of training programs; shortage of professionally trained clinical & laboratory geneticists/Clinicians and paucity of genetic diagnostic centers & referral labs are still to be addressed adequately in our country. Considering these facts, Department of Biotechnology (DBT) invites pre-proposals with the aim to produce skilled clinicians in the area of Human Genetics and establish Genetic Diagnostic Units in Government Hospitals wherein the influx of patients is more.
