National Institute of Plant Genome Research, (NIPGR), New Delhi

Dear All,

As you are aware, the Department has the mandate of promoting women in Science and science for women. With its vision to promote women in science and in an attempt to enhance the participation of Women Scientists in Biotechnology Research, the Department had launched Biotechnology Career Advancement and Re-orientation Programme (BioCARe) for women scientists in January, 2011. Five calls have been announced so far. 315 women scientists (165 unemployed and 150 employed) have been supported so far.

The purpose of the scheme is to build capacities for Women Scientists employed fulltime in Universities and small research laboratories or unemployed women Scientists after a career break so as to help them undertake independent R&D projects. As per the data available, out of 165 women scientists who were unemployed at the time of getting their respective BioCARe projects, 28 have got permanent employment. 270 Research Scholars have been and are being supported under various projects funded under this scheme. More than 200 papers have been published. 11 patents have been filed. Number of applications received under the Program is increasing every year. 1475 applications were received in the last call announced in 2018.

The Program has now completed 8 years and it is important to assess its exact impact and improve it further. In order to do so, a conclave bringing all the grantees on one platform is being organized.

What can be a day better than International Women’s day to celebrate 8 years of this important program supporting women scientists of India? Hence, the BioCARe Conclave is being organized on 8th and 9th March, 2019 on International Women’s day at the National Institute of Plant Genome Research, (NIPGR), New Delhi. The aim of this conclave is to provide a platform to grantees for sharing their journeys in science and explore the contribution of the scheme in developing their careers. The conclave will feature oral and poster presentations by the BioCare awardees who will be selected based on the abstracts submitted by them. Awards will be given for best presentations and posters after evaluation by an Expert Committee.

All the Expert members who have been associated with the program are also participating.

As a part of the DBT family, I take this opportunity to invite you to participate in this conclave and grace this occasion. The program of the conclave its attached herewith.
