DBT-Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) Programme

Department is providing fellowships to biotechnology students for pursuing doctoral research at universities and research institutions across the country. The programme has contributed in building human resource capital and institutional capacity and nurtured excellence in basic and applied research in Biotechnology. Students are selected through computer based Biotechnology Eligibility Test (BET) conducted at national level. Students are selected under two categories. Under category-I, there is a provision to select up to 500 fellows for award of DBT-JRF fellowship, candidates in the merit list beyond this number fall under category-II and are eligible for fellowship equivalent to NET qualified candidates from extramural R&D project funds being supported at universities/institutes. However, it is not binding on Project Investigators/institutions to select project personnel from category II. The programme has gained immense popularity with students, which is evident from increase in number of applicants depicted in Figure below:

Emolument: Department has adopted the DST OM No. DST/PCPM/Z-06/2022, Dated: 26th June, 2023 for revision of fellowship with effective from January 1, 2023. The stipend for Junior Research Fellow (JRF) has been increased from Rs. 31,000 to Rs. 37,000 while for Senior Research Fellow (SRF) it has been increased from Rs. 35,000 to Rs. 42,000.
