Post Graduate Teaching Programme

Postgraduate Teaching Programme in Biotechnology and allied areas is aimed to ensure high standard of teaching and to generate critical mass of trained manpower in the country. This programme has been implemented on the basis of core faculty strength, expertise, infrastructural facilities, R&D grants received by university on competitive funding basis, nearby institutions engaged in biotechnology R&D. Over the last three decades, department has come a long way and depending the demand and need a large number of new programs have been added besides general biotechnology. These include medical, agricultural, marine, veterinary, industrial biotechnology, bioprocess technology, computational biology, and food biotechnology etc. to name a few. The Department at present is supporting 72 Postgraduate courses at various  universities/ institutes offering MSc/MTech/MVSc teaching programmes in biotechnology and allied areas. The location of these institutions is depicted in Map below. The department provides financial support for establishment of laboratory equipment facility essentially required for class room teaching, recurring grants for consumables, studentship, books and journals, travel, visiting faculty, contingency, thesis grant for in-house dissertation, equipment maintenance etc. In-house dissertation has been made mandatory for all the participating institutions and Department is providing a thesis grant of Rs. 50,000/- per student to ensure intensive hands on training. All selected candidates are paid studentships under DBT support.

The Department is under process of making fresh selection of Universities/Institutes for financial support under the PG Teaching Programme during 15th Finance Commission period.

Selection of students

From 2020 onwards, the admission would be through National Level Biotechnology Aptitude Test to be conducted by Regional Center for Biotechnology, Faridabad. Advertisement and other details for the examination would be updated soon.

Course Curriculum

Model course curricula have been developed by Department of Biotechnology through a consultative process to maintain uniformity and ensure minimum standard of education. The curriculum revision exercise is undertaken periodically to incorporate the latest developments and to rationalize the disparities in theoretical and practical training. In order to match the course contents with the upcoming trends, model course curriculum for thirteen PG courses have been developed in 2017-18. Model course curriculum can be accessed by links given below on the page.

Monitoring of programmes

To ensure uniform standard of teaching, these teaching programs are periodically reviewed by in-house advisory committees comprising of outside experts from teaching institutions and industries, and DBT-HRD Task Force.

Success Stories

  • Postgraduate teaching programs were initiated in six universities in 1985-86 with objective to generate a critical mass of trained manpower and have since been expanded to over 74 universities offering general and specialized courses in multidisciplinary areas of biotechnology.

6976 PG students were trained in 74 Universities/institutes during last five years .
