Janaki Ammal-National Women Bioscientist Award
The Department of Biotechnology instituted the National Women Bioscientist Award in the year 1999 to recognize the contributions of senior and young women scientists in the country who are working in the areas of Biology and Biotechnology. The National Women Bioscientist Award is conferred under two categories-Senior and Young. The Award has been renamed as Janaki Ammal- National Women Bioscientist Award in honour of notable Indian botanist Dr. Janki Ammal Edavalath Kakkat.
Nature of Award:
National Women Bioscientist Award (Senior Category)
The senior category award recognizes life time contributions of scientists who have done excellent research in the country with translational research outcomes for benefit of students and society. The Award carries a cash prize of Rs 5.00 lakh along with citation and trophy.
National Women Bioscientist Award (Young Category)
The young category award is given to women scientists below 45 years of age who have made significant contributions in basic and applied research in the areas of biosciences and biotechnology including basic research, agricultural, biomedical and environmental sciences with potential for product and technology development. The Award carries a cash prize of Rs 1.00 lakh with citation and a gold medal and Research Grant of Rs 5.00 lakhs per annum for a period of 5 years.
- Any Citizen of India who is engaged in basic and applied research in the areas of Biosciences and Biotechnology in the country. The work (of last 5 years) for which nomination is made must have been carried out in Indian institutes and acknowledged in the publications.
- The senior category award is for excellence in research (not for governance/management of Science) and there is no age limit. For the young category, the candidate should be below 45 years of age as on closing date of application submission.
Nominations for Award:
Nominations from individuals sponsoring their own names are not considered. Nominations for the applicants forwarded through Head/Executive authority of the Institutes/Scientific Organizations/Scientific Departments/approved scientific academies or societies are considered for selection.
So far department has supported 63 women scientists in which 18 candidates have been supported in last 5 years.
