S. Ramachandran-National Bioscience Award for Career Development: 

Purpose: The Department of Biotechnology (DBT) instituted the National Bioscience Award for Career Development in the year 1999 to recognize outstanding contributions of young scientists below 45 years of age who are engaged in basic and applied research in Biological Sciences including Biotechnology, Agricultural, Medical and Environmental Sciences. The Award has been renamed as S. Ramachandran- National Bioscience Award for Career Development in honour of Dr. S. Ramachandran, founder Secretary of DBT. The award recognizes the significant contributions made by the scientists in their respective domain research areas with potential for product and technology development and to provide a research grant to boost their research initiatives in their career development pathway.

Nature of Award:

Upto 10 awards per year, subject to availability of suitable candidates, are given. Each Award carries a cash prize of Rs 2.00 lakh, a citation and a trophy along with research project grant of Rs 15.00 lakh (Rs.5.00 Lakh/year) for a period of 03 years.

Eligibility:

  • Any Citizen of India who is engaged in basic and applied research in the areas of Biosciences and Biotechnology in the country.
  • He/She should have made outstanding contribution in the areas of Biosciences/Biotechnology during last 5 years and the work must have been carried out entirely in India.
  • He/she should be below the age of 45 years as on closing date of application submission.

Nominations for Award:

Nominations for the applicants forwarded through Head/Executive authority of the Institutes/Scientific Organizations/Scientific Departments/approved Scientific Academies or Societies are considered for selection. Nominations from individuals sponsoring their own names are not considered. The nominations include a brief project proposal for proposed research for 3 years.

Achievements

So far department has supported 161 scientists in which 52 have been supported in last 5 years.
